Tattoo Artist Recommendations
Kelsey Schwartz·January 15, 2023
Studio Wren is a piercing only studio, but we are happy to support local tattoo artists and refer you to a shop that can help you with your next tattoo project. We've also included some general guidelines for choosing an artist and tattoo shop to help keep you safe and prepare for your appointment appropriately.
Do your research
- Look at portfolios, figure out what style you're looking for, and consult with potential artists ahead of time
- Some artists book weeks or months in advance so be prepared to wait if it means getting the tattoo that you want
- Look at shop policies before going in. Some shops accept walk-ins some are private studios that do everything by appointment only.
You get what you pay for
- "Good work ain't cheap and cheap work ain't good" is definitely a saying that applies to tattoos.
- Shop minimum average in the area: $100
- Hourly rate average in the area: $150-$250
- Tipping isn't required, but it is a service so a 15-20% tip is considered polite etiquette
What to look for in a tattoo shop
- Cleanliness! While all shops will have a unique style they should never compromise their cleanliness. Do they have sharps containers to dispose their needles in, do they have a separate space for the artists food, are they setting up new supplies for each client?
- Do you and the artist get along? You don't have to be best friends, but you do need to be able to communicate well to ensure you come out with a tattoo you love.
- Is the shop licensed by the state? You can inquire about a shops licensing with the State of Texas at this link.
